There are a lot of Google cast equipment available that supports hardware decoding of HEVC.

• Chromecast Ultra
• Android TV: Nvidia Shield TV + other china variants.

Videostream lets us stream to Android TV devices, but treat it as a regular Chromecast. Therefore HEVC files gets trancoded on the "server" PC before streamed to the device, which is very CPU intensive and often leads to lag/ stuttering.

I wish in future updates Videocast could differentiate the various Google Cast devices, and by the specs decide whether a stream should be streamed directly or transcoded.

Here is a little bat file I made when the "Videostream firewall fix" failed on me.
Tested on Windows 10, all good.

Save this as whatever.bat, then right click and run as admin
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Videostream" dir=in profile=private localport=5556,5558 protocol=TCP action=allow

Since google is slow implementing hevc support in their cast api (probably because of licensing and stuff) would it make sense to create an videostream receiver application that could use android tv boxes built in hardware support for different codecs? Like HEVC?

There are multiple android tv boxes supporting hardware decoding of HEVC, without googling i know of:

• nvidia Shield TV (existing, and also v2 which is coming soon)
• Xiaomi Mi Box (recent models)
• Various android tv boxes using s912, s905+ SoCs

I can cast to my Shield TV, so what are you missing?

What do you do when streaming HEVC to Android TV devices with hardware HEVC decode support? Like Nvidia Shield TV and MXQ Pro S905?

Would be neat if you didn't trancode it. My "server" (in this case my laptop) really have problems transcoding h265 to h264 without lagging.
