The National Flag of Palau was adopted on January 1, 1981, upon separation from the United Nations Trust Territory. Given its similarity in design to the Japanese national flag, Futaranosuke Nagoshi, a Japanese professor suggested that by adopting this design the island group pays tribute to the Japanese flag.
