Do you have difficulty setting fitness goals that stick? We have all been there. Here are five tips for creating a success plan and achieving more than you thought possible!
- Find your motivation - be honest
The first and most important step in goal setting is to find the purpose of your training. It's important to be honest in your assessment and really understand the "why" behind your fitness goals.
Looking for a more optimal lifestyle? Just want to get that six pack before summer? Just hoping to feel better every day? Define your personal motivation and review it as you go.
That being said, you also want to be optimistic. When you set realistic goals, you go the extra mile to make sure you challenge yourself to achieve more than you ever thought possible. Reach for the stars and maybe you'll get one.
- Be realistic but optimistic
Your goals are for you and only you.
When setting your fitness goals, be realistic about what you can achieve. That doesn't mean you're setting the bar low. It means setting your limits, understanding your story, and choosing milestones that you can actually achieve.

- Break your long-term goal into micro-goals
By setting micro goals, or smaller goals that build on your long-term goals, you can achieve smaller milestones and track your progress in a realistic and measurable way.
For example, if you want to lose 20 pounds over the next year, your microgoals should break that number down into smaller tasks. After three months, you may want to lose five pounds just to get started. Then after the next three you might want to raise and lose 10, and so on.
These microgoals keep you on track and force you to look ahead for measurable results.
- Start Small: Aim for one goal at a time
Once you've determined your microgoals, attack them one by one.
When you reach your first microgoal after three months, focus on it. When you reach that goal, celebrate it like your life depends on it! Every milestone is a milestone in this process and should be celebrated and cherished along the way. At every stage, I like to take the approach of an elite athlete.

Remember that success does not come overnight. Consider each workout in your fitness program one step closer to achieving your results.
