Biological antennas and an artificial brain, this is how this robot manages to smell thanks to Artificial Intelligence as if it had a nose.
Robots are evolving, thanks to human development, by leaps and bounds. These amalgamations of circuitry, wiring, metal parts, and industrial compounds each time have more and better characteristics. In recent years, they have even been endowed with the ability to taste and, now, to smell, as is the case with this robot .
When you read that this robot is capable of smell, it is most likely that you have let your imagination run wild and what comes to mind is a metal casing in the shape of a face in which there is a nose typical of a human being. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, this robot does not have a humanoid resemblance .
In fact, its appearance is more reminiscent of a radio controlled car than of a human being. The team behind this feat is led by Neta Shvil in collaboration with Dr. Ben Maoz from the Fleischman School of Engineering, Yossi Yovel and Amir Ayali as professors in the School of Zoology at Tel Avid University.
This scientific milestone represents a huge advance in the identification of odors by robots and in order to carry out the development, a platform called "biohybrid" had to be created . This platform uses biological sensors for detection and electronic systems for the transmission of information.
Smelling is the main characteristic of this robot that has just been created
As reported in Neuroscience News , the development of this smelling robot has been difficult and challenging. First, a number of issues needed to be resolved, including finding a biological part capable of accurately layering odors. This ended up leading them to use antennae from a desert locust .
The antennas were connected to an electronic system whose function was to constantly and accurately measure the electrical signal generated by the antennas when perceiving some type of odor. Logically , this only managed to indicate that the antenna had picked up an odor , it did not classify the odor by its characteristics.
In order to classify the smells, Artificial Intelligence was used , which after having been trained was able to identify the smells at the same level as a human nose. It is difficult to imagine the technological application for a robot of this type, but what they have in mind is that the technology be used for the detection of drugs, explosives and etc.
