In November 2019, the Indian government declared that effective January 15, 2021, hallmarking of gold jewelry and artifacts will be required across the country. The deadline was extended back four months, from June 1 to June 15, due to the covid19 situation. This decision was made by Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal at a meeting with industry stakeholders. Hallmarking is an official mark that is recognized internationally on precious metal items.
