[Developer Post] - Stuttering + Buffering + Lagging Help Thread!

  • I have two videos ,both mkv both aac audio, tried both versions of videostream with same result, changing quality didnt help, one runs at 5 % cpu with no trancoding the other has nacl64 running at 90 % cpu.

    no transcoding.txt

    transcoding 100%.txt

  • Jason you missed one very significant cause of buffering. Improper encoding was the cause in my case. None of my mp4 files (1080P, 720P) would stream without buffering every 15 seconds and using the cpu at 100%. The videos had been created with either GoPro Studio or Adobe Premiere Elements. To fix the issue I used HandBrake to re-encode the files with these changes,

    Video
    H.264 Profile : High
    H.264 Level : 5.0

    Audio
    Codec : HE-AAC

Now they stream perfectly with no buffering. The cpu use hovers around 4%.

  • I only play .avi files with Video Stream but all of a sudden an .avi file is being blocked from playing. I recently bought the lifetime membership and got the error when trying to play the second item listed in my Q. Could this be the problem? I tried the fix from Malwarebites Anti-Virus software you offer but that does not work. Your directions are for Free and Pro versions but the Free version has this info grayed out so it's not possible to do.

  • I did the same thing videonovice recommended and now videostrream seems to be working fine, without buffering. Before I did that the buffering was every 10 or 15 seconds or so.
The annoying thing is that this thing of using HandBrake to re-encode the files is time consuming, it's not the idea. Would you there at Videostream team fix this issue please.

  • Ok Ive got one, I can cast if I drop a video into the chrome browser tab with no problem (except very limited formats)
now when i cast it using Videostream i have hang ups and buffering issues even at low resolution. I am using Norton 360 thinking it was a fire wall issue, but even with the fire wall disabled it doesn't work. It cant be a communication issue as I can cast in the browser tab. I tried your fix for the fire wall with no results. So what am i doing wrong? When it works Videostream is great but the last week I've had nothing but problems. Frustrated and looking for some suggestions please.

  • @Jason-from-Videostream Hi Jason, here is my reply after downloading and testing the old version like you suggested

I'm having the same issues with the old version. there is no "buffering..."-notification but the video is hanging for some seconds from time to time just like in the new version.

  • @Lommelun Many thanks to you.
The key is Chromecast supports only Video encoding H264 high Level4.1, as Lommelun pointed out.
After transcoding the L4.0 video into L4.1 with HandBrake, my video now plays smoothly with very low CPU usage.

  • I can easily stream a 4.5 GB .mkv to my chromecast with little to no stutter, but exceeding this seems to cause issues. I tried a higher quality 16 GB .mkv and it could not handle the buffering rate.

Please keep in mind that my chromecast and my router are within 2 ft. of one another.

  • Dear Videostream crew and helpers,

I've also had buffering problems and came here to find a solution. I didn't read everything but it seems there isn't a solution yet, so I thought of helping instead.

So in most cases the problems appeared when watching movies and bigger files, but not always. The reason I came here was because the last time it appeared while watching the latest episode of Walking Dead S06E03, witch shouldn't be any problem and als hasn't been.
The thing is, I've noticed it always happens at the exact same scene and about the same time in, a little after 5 min's right after the intro. It's this file: The.Walking.Dead.S06E03.HDTV.x264-KILLERS[ettv]

I've downloaded it twice, but there's no difference between the [ettv] or [rarbg] file, however I'm not actually sure if there is any difference between them.

    • Tuning down the quality to 360 seems to make it happen less, but it still occured even though it didn't last as long.
    • Rebooting the chromecast doesn't help.
    • Restarting chrome doesn't change anything.
    • I've installed the chrome-64 version but it's exactly the same.

    I'm using a Lenovo Flex-2 15 with i7-4510u 64bit witch is exactly a year old, a regular first-gen chromecast, and a TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND WiFi router less than a year old.

Being closer or further to the router is irrelevant since we have a pretty small living room and my laptop is never more than 5 meters from the router. There's also not mutch activity on the WiFi when where watching something.

I'm not a expert, but I know that I can ruly out devices capability, or network capability and such. Actually my cpu usage is very low when I start a video and ther's no problems, it only goes up when I switch the quality because it start's encoding.

So to the point, I have no clue what the difference between 10/8bit file's means, but I get that there's a difference in the transcoding or other work the program has to do in the background.
I was hoping the Walking Dead file might clear up where the problem can be found since it seems to appear on almost exactly the same moment every time.

So keep up the good work, I'll keep checking here, and hopefully we can find a solution. Thks.

P.s. i've also enabled the Videocompression option in Videostream, no difference.

  • I have sent several emails, about this issue. and get the auto responds.
For the past week, I have been using VideoStream for about 6 months with no issues, it will not load a movie. It will buffer, then not connect to the chromecast saying it cannot be found. Hulu, Netflix, Youtube and any other tab I try to cast no issue, even in HD.
I have rebooted my pc, my chromcast, my router, and I even did the fix link the autobot sent me in the email. Still have the issue.
    Any other tips to try?

  • Hi,

I just started using Videostream today, but it seems like I'm experiencing a bug.

Every video I try plays perfectly for about five minutes, then I get the "buffering" message for several minutes (I thought it was hanging forever but as I am writing this message the video I was watching started playing again, this was about 3 minutes of buffering). Pausing and playing the video doesn't do anything, but if I close the video and open it again it plays fine for about five more minutes, then gets stuck on buffering again. The original buffering only takes a second or so. It's a 320p/121MB file, but it also happened with a larger file, 1080p/2.1GB. I am also using a UTF-8 encoded subtitle file.

Other information that might pertain: my router is a Linksys E1200 v2 running DD-WRT with a DNS that is blacklisting ad sites with the hosts file from winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm, could that be related? I read that you don't play ads on the TV so I don't think so, but you never know... The router doesn't appear to be overloaded by the traffic though.

Any information on this would be great and I'll provide logs or anything else you need.

  • G'day guys,
I'm a big fan of your product but recently I've been having issues since I purchased a Surface Pro 4 (i5).
Quite frequently, (but not always) my playback will stutter, often to the point of the content not being watchable. Most recently when I was watching a 3.5gb mkv file it began to stutter when the scene had lots of background movement. (the slomo scene towards the end of Zoolander 2). My CPU usage is low and my computer and chromecast are no more than 5 meters from the router, with no obstructions. This often occurs when watching movies, less with TV shows.
This issue rarely occurred on my old device (2011 MacBook pro i7), but since the upgrade, Videostream has become very unreliable.

Could this be due to the different NIC? limitations with the Chromecast itself? Higher compressed content? Windows/Mac?

I'd really like to resolve this as I happily pay for your product and would really like to continue to use it, but these days I often go back to a USB drive for watching content.

    Cheers all,

    Jackson

  • Hi i'd like to add my name into the list of people experiencing stuttering/ buffering issues. I am on a 5ghz band wireless connectivity. devices are no more than 20 feet away from each other. It is also the only 5ghz device connected at the time of streaming. I've resetted chromecast multiple times to no avail as well as full factory reset. I've tried multiple video files and they all experience the same frequency of stuttering/ buffering issues. I also use the videostream app on iOS to pause the video and let it buffer but it returns to buffering no more than 10 sec after smooth playback. I'm on videostream premium as well.

  • Has anyone got this issue solved yet? Whenever i had a video lag or start buffering it was normally just a bad connection. Shutting down Videostream and relaunching corrected the issue. But i timed this lag, it is on the dot every 5min. This can be just a bad connection or video file issue if everyone with all different videos is having the same issue. Im noticing it seemed to have occured right after the big update. More than likely that is the issue. Are they working on a real fix?

  • @JOsteen I have the same issue and you correct it is every 5 minutes. I've checked all my connections, anti-virus, chromecast and my router to no avail. Netflix,, Plex and other streaming services are ok but Videostream seems to have this issue.

  • Add me name to the list with the exact problem. Every 5 minutes it jumps back a few seconds. Any software downgrade available to temporarily fix this?

  • Add me to the list as well. I have buffering issues. It would buffer go back a few seconds, play smoothly and then repeat every 5 minutes or so. I have premium as well. I would also like to know if I can revert back to and older version?

  • Having the exact same issue. Buffering every 5-10min no matter whats the quality is.

  • The developers don't follow the forums anymore. We are to notify support directly. I just that right now and hope a solution will come. I'll share whatever they say here, however if anyone else has emailed them already and got a response, I and the others would love to hear what was said. Thanks! :)

  • I contacted emailed them 2 weeks ago and still no answer.
    Anyone heards from them?
    Thanks!
